JUST a few sleeps to go ‘till Aug 31… the day we honour the strength, resilience and dreams that have shaped Malaysia into the nation we cherish today. How will you be celebrating this proud chapter of our shared story?

Looking for a mix of national pride, festive cheer, and a hint of liberating discovery? You’re in luck. During Merdeka month, Malaysian streets explode with colour, the rhythm of kompang and drumlines fills the air, and the delicious smells of nasi lemak, chee cheong fun, and banana leaf rice tempt you at every turn. While the main National Day parade – traditionally held at Dataran Merdeka – will take place in Putrajaya this year, Downtown KL is still buzzing with a line-up of events that’ll have you waving the Jalur Gemilang with pride. From retro markets and cultural performances to sky-high challenges and street festivals, here’s your guide to celebrating from now till Malaysia Day in September.

Maybank Foundation Cultural Art Showcase & Bazaar (CASB) 2025 @ Menara Maybank (ongoing until 19 Sept)
Celebrate Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage at this month-long festival featuring live performances, hands-on workshops, artisanal booths, and a feast of local flavours. From Wushu, traditional dance, and Wayang-inspired acts to batik, henna, crafts, and foodie delights, CASB 2025 is a vibrant showcase of creativity, culture and community all under one roof.

Check-In Merdeka @ Central Market (Aug 29 – Sept 1)
Central Market brings you a crowd-pleaser – this time a retail-driven celebration loaded with cultural and travel-themed fun. From mesmerising wayang kulit and graceful traditional dance to hands-on batik painting, henna artistry and even a 3D art museum, there’s something here for every selfie-taker and culture buff. And yes, the street food game will be strong – don’t try to resist.

Truly Malaysian Pop Up Market @ REXKL (Aug 29-31)
Shop, browse, and soak up the Merdeka vibes with homegrown brands, good eats and festive energy at REXKL.
“The (four) floodlight towers were erected without the help of a crane, a remarkable achievement back in the 1950s,” he said.

The Sky Race @ Merdeka 118 (Aug 30)
Not all Merdeka celebrations happen on the ground – some are 503 metres in the air. This first-ever stair race up Merdeka 118, the world’s second tallest building, is your shot at bragging rights (and possibly jelly legs). Conquer 2,845 steps across 118 floors and you’ll reach a level that’s not usually open to the public. The reward? Breathtaking panoramic views of KL, just hours before the nation’s birthday. Whether you’re an elite athlete or simply chasing a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list item, this one’s a heady mix of challenge and celebration. Sign up here theskyrace.com.

And here’s a little bonus from the Merdeka 118 team: they’ve turned up the volume on celebrating Merdeka! Check out their Spotify playlist – a handpicked collection of tracks inspired by our shared rhythm, local legends, everyday pride and timeless unity. It’s a soundtrack that captures the heartbeat of Malaysia’s stories, culture and community — perfect for getting into the Merdeka spirit wherever you are.

Sentuhan Rempah x Ayayu Workshops (Aug 30)
Celebrate Hari Kebangsaan with a morning full of colour, creativity and good vibes! Sentuhan Rempah is teaming up with Ayayu Workshops for a hands-on batik painting session where you can slow down, get your hands messy, and bring Malaysian culture to life — one brushstroke at a time.

Settle in at Tong Shin Terrace, sip a drink, savour a delicious brunch, and let the warm wax-and-dye magic guide your creativity. The session is priced at RM90 per person and is perfect whether you’re a seasoned crafter or simply looking for a relaxed, arty way to kick off Merdeka celebrations. Traditional wear is encouraged – Kebaya and Batik Shirt rentals are available, just wear a black or white inner for easy changing. And yes – plenty of Instagram-worthy moments await! Spaces are very limited, so sign up quickly at +6011-56403307 (The Rempah Table).

Pasar Malaya @ Badan Warisan Malaysia (Aug 30–31 & Sept 20)
This arts and crafts market comes with a side of Malaysian heritage on a plate. Yes, you’ll find gorgeous handmade goods, but you’ll also feast on beloved staples like nasi lemak, roti canai and laksa – alongside regional gems like burasak, mi kolok and nasi ambeng. Relive childhood afternoons playing gasing, congkak or batu seremban, then slip into Old Malaya glam or traditional wear for the Irama dan Lagu DJ set, spinning nostalgic Malaysian hits deep into the night.

Made in KL @ Semua House (Aug 30 – Sept 1)
The newly revamped Semua House, just off Jalan Masjid India, is ready to show off its local pride. Organised by the folks behind the KL Alternative Book Fest, this inaugural event puts the spotlight on Malaysian-made everything – from books and crafts to drool-worthy eats. Think of it as a love letter to KL creativity, where you might just leave with a handmade tote bag and a renewed crush on your own city.

Keretapi Sarong (Sept 13)
Part flash mob, part cultural movement, Keretapi Sarong has been turning train rides into rolling fashion parades since 2012. Participants board LRT, MRT and KLIA Transit trains in sarongs and other traditional attire, converging on iconic city spots in a joyous wave of colour. This year, the theme is Serumpun (“from the same root”), tying in with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025. “It’s a unique opportunity to reflect on our regional connection,” says Locco co-founder Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman. Expect multi-location coordination, cultural performances and – as always – the infectious energy of Malaysians coming together, sarong-clad and smiling.

Festival Budaya Malaysia (FBM 2025) @ Titiwangsa Lake Gardens (Sept 12–16)
For the first time, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is bringing us Festival Budaya Malaysia 2025. Expect over 300,000 visitors to immerse themselves in 68 segments of arts and cultural activities in this vibrant celebration of Malaysian creativity and heritage!

Among the main attractions: International-level games, national competitions, interactive booths and exhibitions, Malaysian Drum Gala performances, multi-racial cultural showcases, and performances by top local artists. And a special highlight this year: Wayang Kulit groups from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia will come together for a unique collaborative performance. Presented across three stages, these performances are woven into a single narrative – a concept being showcased for the very first time.

Whether you’re racing up 118 floors, browsing vibrant markets, painting your own batik, dancing in traditional wear, or enjoying cultural showcases from across the region, celebrating National Day in Downtown KL proves patriotism can be as fun as it is meaningful. Mark your calendars, gather your friends, and let’s paint the town Merdeka!
