Petaling Sweets: 4 Cafes in Petaling Street to have on a hot, hot day!

Nabila Azlan | 13 February 2025

Honestly, one does not seem to run out of things to do while you’re at Petaling Street. There’s street art, multitudes of cultural sightings in the form of timely exhibits and music shows, and best of all, Malaysian food can be savoured in all of its glory. The real challenge, however, is finding a parking space to accommodate your day-long schedule of activities! (There are plenty of paid parking spaces nearby, fret not, and there’s also the LRT/MRT option, which is the best to beat traffic! Head to the Pasar Seni LRT/MRT station and take a five-minute walk).

The street, landmarked by its bustling, eponymous market, is swarming with people of all ages seeking great deals and street snacks. While the Petaling Street Market on Jalan Petaling is a haven for trendy goods, within the vicinity you can book a ticket to the arts and culture hub REXKL, as well as the cultural one-stop-centre that is the Central Market (Pasar Seni). A stone’s throw away stands Jalan Panggong, a hotspot with mushrooming modern cafes and eateries fit for kings of curiosity (and those who are hungry too!). If you’re walking around Petaling Street (aka Chinatown KL) and you’re thinking about drinks and sweets in between your sightseeing — ice kacangs, lattes, cakes and mochis, boy, do we have a list for you!
Manis KL: For shaved ice and other fail-proof Malaysian jellies
Manis KL, a newly-opened dessert joint next to famous artsy alley-way Kwai Chai Hong, is a gem; truthfully, a treat for your tastebuds. True to its name, Manis KL is an easy-to-love stop offering local desserts like coconut milk sago, traditional jelly bowls (like Peach Gum), classic sweet soups (like Bubur Cha Cha and Longan), gula melaka and soy desserts, as well as ice kacang and cendol. An extension to its local sweets menu is its Bingsu (Korean for shaved ice dessert) list — Durian or Calamansi anyone? A must-visit after some serious photo-taking at Kwai Chai Hong!

Manis KL’s tagline may be “Where Dessert Always Comes First” but the joint also offers various types of hot food, namely Yong Tau Foo, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Congee.
Gerson Batik x 16 Degrees Outpost: For latte and bites with a ‘batik-ful’ view
You can easily spend hours at Gerson Batik. The batik store and creative centre is home to three tailors (who are sisters) hailing from Klang, known for their custom Malaysian batik dresses and tops. The family-owned business in KL is a local-delight collaboration, with 16 Degrees Outpost serving coffees and cakes to its visitors. Quench your thirst in between your hauls with a cup of coconut latte, cold brew yuzu or take a sip of their handcrafted beverages (Watermelon Rose Lychee is calling!). While you’re at it, try the pandan gula melaka cake and dirty tiramisu!

Gerson is a creative centre where visitors can opt to join a list of workshops. Try your hand at candle making or batik painting; if you have more time to spare, perfume and lotion making are also offered. If you’re not keen on coffees or cakes, Gerson is also home to Looi Looi Ice Cream, a homegrown brand with fruity flavours of Cameron Highlands!

Kaffe 16: For matcha, mocktails and macarons…

Kaffe 16’s appeal is in its reliability. You can swing by if you’re in the mood for sweets, but it also serves all-day breakfast options if you’re feeling more than peckish. It caters to not only young, hip cafe-hoppers in their Sunday best but also families and couples in need of some downtime. The place lends a clean interior with a discovery section by the cashier area (where you can learn about the cafe’s coffee beans – Ethiopian, Costa Rican and Kenyan). Its cakes, mochis and fraisiers are true eye candy and will certainly hit the sweet spot … a special mention goes to the Signature Beryl’s Tiramisu. Did we forget to mention? Beloved Malaysian chocolate brand Beryl’s is just next door.
