What is Warisan KL?

Warisan KL is a national heritage and culture-based urban rejuvenation initiative that strives to revitalise the soul of Kuala Lumpur through the reimagination and recovery of our built heritage to make our city more liveable while driving new opportunities in tourism, community enterprise and commercial developments. It reflects a national commitment to innovation and inclusive urban development where history, arts, culture and creativity come together to shape a new, exciting future for Kuala Lumpur.

Spearheaded and launched by YAB Dato' Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, Warisan KL is a national endeavour that brings together Government Ministries and Agencies, GLICs, GLCs, private sector partners and communities across Malaysia to shape Kuala Lumpur together as a city known for its rich history, a melting pot of cultures, authentic food and creativity.

By breathing new life into this part of the city, Warisan KL is transforming it into a vibrant hub for culture, creativity and community – sparking job opportunities, attracting local and international tourists and visitors, and driving investment opportunities. The goal is clear: to make KL a city for everyone – inclusive, progressive and sustainable.

Why Warisan KL?

Warisan KL is home to over 500 heritage shophouses, colonial landmarks and post-Merdeka icons that reflect the city’s rich cultural identity. Yet, many of these treasures have faced years of neglect, marked by the departure of residents and businesses, deteriorating historic buildings, and a growing disconnect between old and new developments.

Warisan KL is leading a collective national movement to bring the city back to life by rejuvenating key areas such as the surrounding Merdeka 118 area including Stadium Merdeka, Carcosa and Seri Negara, Old Railway Station, Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad and Dataran Merdeka area, Masjid Jamek enclave, Medan Pasar and Kompleks Dayabumi area, among others. This is more than restoration, it’s about:
